Living and Learning with New Media
In Chapter 9 of Richardson's Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts, Richardson mentions the 2008 MacArthur Foundation and the Digital Youth Project report "Living and Learning With New Media"(2010, 131). I thought it would be worth while for us to read the report and reflect on its findings here. I plan to report back in the next two days with my reaction to it. You can link to the white pages of the report by clicking on the title of this blog post.

While we know how much new media has transformed culture during the past decade, I found it interesting to consider how friendship-driven and interest-driven online activity has affected the lives of youth, how such changes may impact my role as an educator and how much youth perceptions of relationships and knowledge may differ from my own perceptions.
ReplyDeleteI agree, children get online now to communicate and keep up with friends instead of going outside to play. I remember when I was in school, I lived for my time to go play. Now kids want to play on the internet. I think it speaks to the drastic changes we have been undergoing with technology. I used to only get on the internet for research, but I find myself logging on for anything now. I guess it has its positives and negatives like everything else.
ReplyDeleteI heard Sherry Turkle being interviewed on NPR yesterday. She talked about some new problems of being connected all the time. Evidently, her research has shown that many people--not just young people--don't have a chance to develop their real-life identity, for they are so immersed in the need to connect with others online. I'll try to find the title and tell you more about it.
ReplyDeleteI would be interested in learning more, Dawn. Thank you!
